Ryan Haghi

Engineering Physics (Mech Specialization) student at the Stephen J. R. Smith Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science, building toward a career in nuclear engineering.

I founded the Queen's Nuclear Engineering Team to get hands on nuclear and clean energy work before I graduate. Currently a Mechanical Engineering Intern at BayPath Inc. and a Dean's Scholar at Queen's.

Queen's Nuclear Engineering Team

Founder & President

Founded and chartered a nuclear engineering design club from nothing. Ran an information night, interviewed nearly 30 applicants over two days, and hired 13 founding executives. The team passed 50 general members within six months.

Secured $2,000+ in sponsorship through outreach to roughly 80 companies and a tiered package, built the team website end to end, and set up QNET School, the onboarding curriculum for incoming members. Currently directing three technical tracks: a Nuclear Cleanup Rover, an SMR Cooling System, and Gamma Ray Imaging.

HR Deputy

The cross-cutting deputy on the HR team, supporting the DoHR across all four pillars of the portfolio: hiring, training, feedback, and engagement.

Building a feedback routing system so student feedback actually reaches the right director instead of sitting in an inbox, a hire-tracking system that feeds directly into training completion, and a dedicated HR section on the EngSoc website so students can find us.

What I've built

APSC 103 · Winter 2025 · Canadian Space Agency

Lunar Greenhouse End Effector

A 12-week collaboration with the CSA designing the gripper for an automated harvesting arm inside a lunar greenhouse. The end effector had to grip model plants, stay under 60 g and 60,000 mm³, and complete the harvest in under 30 seconds, mounted to the HarveStar rover.

We prototyped three concepts, rack and pinion, claw, and fin-ray, each servo driven and 3D printed in PLA and TPU, then scored them on complexity, reliability, manufacturability, and upscaling. I owned the problem definition and scope, the conceptual design section, and the project plan.

Have You Ever Seen the Stars

A public art installation that makes light pollution something you feel instead of something you read about. A miniature suburban neighbourhood with LED-controlled houses and stars: press a button to pick a city, and the buildings brighten while the stars fade out, recreating that city's real sky.

The WiFi module pulls live light pollution data for the selected city and drives 40+ NeoPixels across multiple circuits, with a photodiode and control light source standing in for the full-scale Sky Quality Meters. The whole build runs under 30 V and came in under $300.

I was in charge of circuit modeling, soldering, assembly, and report writing.

Water Filtration Prototype

A working prototype water treatment plant for a northern community that had lost access to clean water. Dirty water is pumped into a coagulation tank where alum and a driven mixing bar pull debris out of suspension, then passes through a dispensing assembly as potable water.

Built as three integrated subassemblies around an Arduino control board, pumps, and 3D printed structural framing, then demonstrated end to end.

Personal Build

Automated Creatine Dispenser

A self-directed build: an automated dispenser that measures and delivers a consistent creatine dose on demand, so the scoop guesswork goes away.

Designed, printed, and wired end to end, from the dispensing mechanism through to dose calibration.
